House of Sweets ~un petit nid~

Title: House of Sweets ~un petit nid~

Synopsis

He only needed one thing important to him—and that would be enough.

Kase has been recently laid off. He's dreading the job search process when Agi, the tough-looking owner of a bakery, calls out to him and gives him a job on the spot. Kase is unsociable and doesn't know how to deal with people, and the warm friendly atmosphere of the bakery leaves him unsettled and confused. A fire at his apartment somehow ropes Kase into living with Agi, and as they spend more time together, Kase feels helplessly attracted to Agi's gentle hands. The kinder that Agi treats him, the more Kase finds himself dependent on Agi, and Kase's overflowing feelings almost overwhelm him...

What I Think

Honestly, reading this was challenging, not due to poor writing, but because Kase's story is intensely real and confronting. Despite the seemingly light-hearted title, the novel tackles serious themes. Kase's background of abuse was shocking and unexpected, but it was refreshing to see his past genuinely affect his character. Unlike many narratives where past abuse serves only as a tragic backstory without impacting the character's present actions, this story realistically explores the lasting effects of trauma and neglect on Kase.

It was disheartening yet profound to see Kase's struggle with his history and attempts to change. It showcases a nuanced portrayal of personal growth. The addition of Agi into his life doesn't magically resolve all his issues. Kase's journey towards healing continues, marked by problems like clinginess, low self-esteem, and paranoia, even as the story concludes on a hopeful note. Agi's presence brings love and support, but not miraculous cures, highlighting a more realistic, albeit imperfect, path to recovery.

Agi, too, is depicted with his own set of flaws, avoiding the trope of the flawless savior. This makes their relationship more balanced and believable.

While the story provides a satisfying narrative, it's important to note that it's not the light, fluffy read its title might suggest. However, it's interspersed with moments of humor, providing relief amidst the heavier themes. It's also a spin-off, which might explain why certain elements seem to assume background knowledge, but this doesn't significantly hinder the overall reading experience. Just be prepared for a story that's far from simplistic; it offers instead a complex, rewarding journey.
