Synopsis of If I'm Being Honest by Emily Wibberley

Cameron Bright is a queen bee. She's the gorgeous, talented, brutally honest HBIC of her fancy L.A. high school. But even queens mess up sometimes, and Cameron's big mouth just might have ruined her chances with her crush, Andrew.

Determined to win him back, she decides to do a total personality makeover, channeling her inner Shakespearean heroine (Katherine from The Taming of the Shrew, to be exact). First step? Apologizing to everyone she's ever wronged, including Brendan, the guy she gave a super embarrassing nickname back in middle school. Brendan's not exactly thrilled about Cameron's sudden change of heart, but they start to bond over his video game project. Now if only Andrew would pay attention...

The more time Cameron spends with Brendan, though, the more she realizes he actually likes her for who she is – sharp tongue and all. Suddenly, she's wondering if she should be changing herself for the wrong guy. Maybe the love she deserves doesn't require sacrificing who she is.

A Brief Review of If I'm Being Honest by Emily Wibberley

I was hoping for a juicy examination of the mind of a mean girl, but that's not what I got. If that's your thing, check out "Some Girls Are."

The main character, Cameron, is kind of a jerk at first, but she quickly learns to be nicer and makes new friends, yada yada. We've seen this story before, and I think "10 Things I Hate About You" did it better.

The more interesting part was Cameron's family life – her mom's a mess and her dad's basically a sugar daddy. That felt pretty original.

But the writing is just... meh. Cameron sounds like every other YA character out there. It's like YA authors all use the same playbook. You can always tell a Melina Marchetta or Laini Taylor book apart, but a lot of these contemporary YA novels all blur together.

I'll admit, there were some cute moments, and the romance was alright. But overall? Totally forgettable.
